First-time moms often pack too much. Second-time moms pack just enough. Here’s the honest, no-fluff list of what you actually need in your hospital bag.
For Mom — Labor & Delivery
- Lip balm (you’ll thank me later — breathing through contractions is drying)
- Hair ties and a headband
- Your own pillow from home (hospital pillows are not it)
- Warm socks with grip (hospital floors are cold)
- A long phone charger — the outlets are never where you need them
- Snacks for your support person (and honestly, for you post-delivery)
- A light robe or cardigan for walking the halls
For Mom — Recovery
- Loose, high-waisted underwear (or just use the hospital’s — no shame)
- Comfortable nursing bra or soft bralette
- Button-down or wrap pajamas for easy nursing access
- Toiletries — dry shampoo is your best friend
- A going-home outfit (size up — you’ll still have a bump)
For Baby
- One newborn outfit and one 0-3 month outfit (babies are unpredictable sizes)
- A swaddle blanket from home
- Car seat — installed and ready before you leave for the hospital
Documents
- ID and insurance card
- Birth plan (printed, not just on your phone)
- Hospital pre-registration paperwork if required
What to Leave at Home
- Jewelry and valuables
- Too many outfit options
- Your entire skincare routine

Pack your bag around 35-36 weeks — just in case. The less you have to think about during labor, the better.
