There’s something quietly beautiful about the season before motherhood — the waiting, the hoping, the slow and intentional preparing. If you’re in that in-between place right now, somewhere between “not yet” and “maybe soon,” this one’s for you.
I’m not a doctor, and this isn’t medical advice. But as someone who’s been doing the research, making the lifestyle changes, and learning to listen to my body — I wanted to share what’s actually helped me feel more ready, physically and emotionally.
Start with your body
Before anything else, book a preconception checkup with your OB or midwife. Your doctor can check your hormone levels, review any medications you’re on, and give you a clearer picture of where you’re starting from.
One of the first things I did was start taking a prenatal vitamin — even before trying. Folic acid in particular is something your body needs before conception, not after.
Nourish yourself like it matters — because it does
I started paying more attention to what I was eating, not in a restrictive way, but in a this is fuel for something beautiful kind of way. More leafy greens, more protein, less processed food. I also cut back on caffeine, which was harder than I expected — but worth it.
Take care of your mind too
Nobody talks about this enough — the emotional side of preconception. The anxiety, the excitement, the fear of the unknown. I started journaling, going on daily walks, and being really intentional about stress. Your mental health matters just as much as your physical health.
Track your cycle
Understanding your cycle is one of the most empowering things you can do. I use a simple app to track my periods, ovulation signs, and how I’m feeling each day. It’s helped me feel so much more connected to my body.
The bottom line
Preparing for motherhood doesn’t start the moment you see a positive test. It starts now, in the quiet moments of intention and care. You don’t have to have everything figured out. You just have to begin. And you already have. 🤍
